5 Steps to a Perfect Recall Every Time
Recall, or coming when called, is arguably the most critical safety skill for any dog. It allows off-leash freedom and ensures you can protect your pup from dangerous situations. Here is our step-by-step guide to building a rocket-fast recall using positive reinforcement.
1. Start in a Boring Environment
Begin training in your living room or a quiet hallway. Limit distractions so your dog can focus entirely on you and the reward.
2. Charge the Mark
Use your Paw Clicker to mark exactly when your dog turns their head towards you. Click, then treat immediately. Repeat this until the sound of the click creates visible anticipation.
3. The Name Game
Say your dog's name in a happy, upbeat tone. As soon as they look at you, click and reward. Do not ask for any other behavior yet; simply looking at you is the win.
